Did You Know?

History of Brass

The JIB were one of first to adopt brass instruments with valves.

Prior to Adolphe Sax perfecting the Valved brass instrument in 1842 earlier attempts were pretty much useless.

These new inventions reached Jedburgh little more than a decade later in 1854 prior to which the people of Jedburgh had to make do with flutes, drums and bagpipes!

About Us

Jedforest Instrumental Band is based in the Scottish Borders town of Jedburgh.

We are one of the most progressive Brass Band organisations in the United Kingdom. Having won a major award in 2005 in recognition of our presence and impact whilst raising awareness of Brass Music nationaly. Hailed as a model of success the JIB continue to explore new ground, fortify tradition and pioneer uncharted area's of excellence.

As many as sixty players are involved in the band organisation, ranging in age from 7 to 65. We have two brass bands - a senior band and a "junior" band, which perform regularly throughout the year, at concerts, local festivals, church services, and band contests.

The senior band, Jedforest Instrumental Band,.has recently enjoyed a great deal of success on the contest platform under the baton of Musical Director, Alan Fernie. In September 2004, the band represented Scotland at the 3rd Section National Finals in Harrogate and, since November 2004, we are competing in the 2nd Section. On the basis of our contesting performance over the past year, we have been declared "Band of the Year" by the Scottish Brass Band Association.

In November 2003, our junior band became Scottish Youth Champions in the under-16 section, as well as winning other contests. With the inclusion of several adults, the junior band became a 4th Section contesting band in October 2003, being re-named Abbey Brass (Jedforest), and conducted by Cameron Mabon. They came 2nd (out of 4) in the Fourth Section at the Borders Entertainment Contest in November, and 4th overall for entertainment.

We also have a thriving Training Band., also conducted by Cameron Mabon, and consisting of twenty learners, all quite young. It performs at concerts put on by the senior band.

Jedforest Instrumental Band practises twice a week, on Sundays and Thursdays, from 7pm to 9pm.

Abbey Brass (Jedforest) practices twice a week on Sundays (6-7pm) and Wednesdays (7-8.30pm).

The Training Band practices on Sundays from 5-6pm.

All practices take place in the custom-designed bandhall, opened in March 2001 by HRH The Princess Royal. Visitors are welcome to attend any of our practices. The band hall is also used by other local arts organisations, and is an excellent venue for chamber concerts.
